Most parents assume when they send their children to school that they will return at the end of the day relatively unscathed. Their child may come home with a paper cut or a skinned knee on the playground but most do not think about their child losing the tip of his or her finger while in the classroom. This happened to a 9-year-old boy attending a school in the Harrisburg Pennsylvania School District.
On the day the boy was injured a substitute teacher was filling in for the regular teacher. Prior to the accident in an effort to discipline the boy she had apparently directed him to stand in the corner of the room. As he stood there he had his hand on the door jamb. When the teacher left the room with another student who was also apparently in need of discipline she reportedly closed the door causing the boys finger to be caught causing the tip to be severed.
After the accident the boy was taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery to have the fingertip reattached. Fortunately the surgery was successful.
According to the boy the teacher slammed the door. Officials at the school say the boy's injury was the result of an accident. The Harrisburg School District is investigating the incident to determine who in fact closed the door causing the injury.
When someone is injured due to negligent actions of another person, the injured party may be eligible for compensation for his or her injuries. In this case, the boy's parents may file a personal injury lawsuit on his behalf to try to recover the benefits.
