Every school day children throughout Pennsylvania board buses to be transported to schools where their minds are meant to grow. When sending a child off for the day parents expect that everything possible will be done to keep the children safe. This duty of safety extends not only to the bus drivers but to those planning roadways frequented by the bus.
After three accidents involving busses over the course of two years on Big Road/Route 73 in Lower Frederick Township, Pennsylvania, the Perkiomen Valley School District is taking steps to improve the safety of the road. In all of the three accidents busses were on the way to Perkiomen Valley Middle School West. One of the accidents resulted in a fatality.
This is not the first attempt made to improve safety on the road. Following the accident that resulted in a death, a device that displays driver's speed was erected next to the school. Designed to keep traffic travelling at the posted speed limit in the area (50 mph), the device did not have the desired impact. Accordingly the school board is sending a letter to Lower Frederick township supervisors requesting the installation of an S-3 school bus crossing sign.
Included in the letter is a plan that the township supervisors could forward to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, the required application form and information regarding funding of the project.
While thankfully no students have died in any of the three accidents, injuries have been reported. It is unclear whether the family of the adult who did die in one of the accidents filed a wrongful death lawsuit.
