Medical incident to blame in car accident caused by police chief

Anytime a car accident occurs there are multiple reasons why it could have occurred. Most commonly it is due to something a driver does or does not do, but should have. Sometimes however, a motor vehicle accident can occur through no fault of the driver when a medical issue arises. A police chief in a Pennsylvania town knows this all too well.

The man was allegedly the cause of an accident involving one other vehicle as he patrolled Kennett Township earlier this month. As he drove south on Route 82, he reportedly rear-ended the back of a 2000 Jeep and then apparently not realizing what had happened, went home. He returned to the scene after receiving a call from the Chester County Police regarding an accident involving a police car and determining by the damage to his vehicle that he was involved.

The police chief cooperated with state troopers who also arrived at the scene and passed tests that were administered to determine if he was impaired by alcohol. Because the cause of the accident is being attributed to a medical issue known as an absentee seizure, no charges have been filed.

Currently on paid medical leave and being monitored, the man describes the medical incident as a short period of time where a person remains conscious but is unaware of what is happening around him or her. His driver's license has been suspended but may be reinstated if he does not have any additional seizures.

The outcome of this case could have been much worse. Fortunately, in addition to the man's medical condition being addressed, the woman who was in the Jeep that the police chief hit sustained only minor injuries.
