Technological advancements may protect construction workers (P.1)

Working in the construction industry can be very rewarding. It can be a lifelong career leading to many advancement opportunities. At the same time, construction work can be extremely dangerous. These workers often put their faith in the company they work for as they embark on dangerous projects. They have faith that the company is following all safety procedures and has their workers’ safety as a top priority.

Construction workers deserve the best when it comes to their safety. Fortunately, there are many technological advancements that happen every year in terms of construction zone safety. People who do not work in the field may be unaware of the amazing technologies available to companies to keep their employees safe.

Take, for example, a piece of equipment that you may not even know exists: a TMA. TMA stands for Truck Mounted Attenuators. They are better known as crash trucks. These trucks are put in construction zones and are meant to act as a barrier between traffic and construction workers. Basically, their sole purpose is to potentially be hit and absorb the impact of the crash. The issue with these trucks, though, is that the driver of this type of vehicle can often be injured or even killed if an accident occurs.

So one company decided to take on the challenge of improving this technology, and they are testing it out in Pennsylvania and Florida. The company made a driverless TMA called an Autonomous TMA or ATMA. They are conducting a pilot program in our state in order to gather data regarding the vehicle. They hope this advancement can create a safer accident-free work zone.

In our next post, we will discuss a few more technologies that will hopefully increase the safety of construction work zones.
