While it is possible for someone to be injured in an automobile accident, in many cases the design of the vehicle along with safety features continually being added, help to minimize the harm inflicted. Unfortunately this is not the case where motorcycles are concerned, as the nature of the vehicle's design provides virtually no protection to riders. Consequently, it is up to those riding the motorcycles to protect themselves. Perhaps the best way to do this is through the use of a motorcycle helmet.

In the state of Pennsylvania not every rider is required to wear a helmet when riding. Those who do however should be aware that not all helmets are made equally. Novelty helmets which are popular with many riders do not meet the safety standards created by the federal Department of Transportation. Wearing a novelty helmet as opposed to a regular motorcycle helmet could result in brain injuries and skull fractures should a motorcycle accident occur. These serious injuries could result in death.

These helmets, which are often brightly colored, are widely available for purchase on the internet. Though they are lighter weight and cheaper than other helmets it is possible that someone who purchases a novelty helmet may not be aware that it offers a much lower level of safety. According to the National Highway Safety Administration, each year an estimated 800,000 of these helmets are purchased throughout the nation.

Many motorcycle accidents are the result of automobile drivers failing to see the much smaller motorcycles that they share the roads with. Regardless of whether or not a motorcyclist is wearing a helmet, when these accidents occur they can be fatal for the motorcyclist. Accordingly, all need to be aware of their surroundings.
