Interstate 70 claims another life

A man from Ohio was killed in a rollover accident along Interstate 70 in Washington County late Thursday evening.

Pennsylvania State Police say the man was headed eastbound on I-70 when he lost control of his sport utility vehicle and it rolled over into westbound lanes. The man was been identified as a 29-year-old from Martin's Ferry, Ohio.

The man was reportedly driving at around 1:30 a.m. near North Franklin Township, Washington County, about a dozen miles from the Pennsylvania / West Virginia border. He was thrown from his vehicle during the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene of what first responders are calling a horrifying accident.

Interstate 70 was closed for about three hours while clean-up crews cleared the scene. It is unclear if speed was a factor in the accident. When rollover accidents occur, it is often assumed that the driver may have been at fault. The thought is generally that he or she was turning too sharply or driving too fast; however, quite often the problem is the driver's driving habits but how the car was made. When the proper safety precautions are not taken to ensure drivers' safety, accidents and injuries occur. Police have not released an official statement about the cause of this accident, but are continuing to investigate.
