For new parents, the first couple of days following the birth of a child is usually a haze. In addition to being exhausted, many are also unsure of what tests and procedures are being administered and why. This is particularly true when a woman has had a difficult delivery such as those resulting in a cesarean section. Accordingly, for those who find themselves in this situation, it is not uncommon for parents to rely upon caregivers to make sure that everything is going the way it is supposed to. 

For one Pennsylvania couple that reliance may have been misguided. According to law enforcement, a nurse in the hospital where the baby was born gave the newborn pain medication that was meant for the mother. The medication was administered via an IV. The alleged incident was not reported by the nurse before she left for the day and became known only when the baby’s father reported the incident to those working at the hospital.

As a result of the medication error, the newborn suffered problems with both its temperature as well as issues with breathing. Though the baby recovered from the injuries, it reportedly took several days.

It is possible that criminal charges of neglect and endangerment could be pressed against the woman. In addition, it is possible that a civil lawsuit could be forthcoming as well. The extra days the baby spent in the hospital undoubtedly resulted in an accrual of unexpected medical expenses. In addition, emotional distress was probably experienced by the baby’s parents.
