Talking on a cellphone while driving is permitted in Ohio. That does not, however, mean that the behavior is not distracting and potentially dangerous. Ohio residents were recently reminded of exactly just how dangerous talking on a cellphone while driving can be when a truck crashed through the corner of a restaurant.
According to the police report, the driver of a truck was talking to his girlfriend on a cellphone when the accident occurred. The two were engaged in a heated argument which apparently served to distract the driver who then lost control of his truck and crashed into the restaurant. Thankfully, the truck accident occurred just before midnight and only one employee was in the restaurant at the time.
The driver of the truck sustained injuries in the accident and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. His condition, as well as the extent of his injuries, is unknown. The employee who was in the restaurant at the time of the accident was not harmed.
The only silver lining in this accident is that it occurred at the hour it did. Had the driver crashed into the restaurant during dinner time, it's likely he would have seriously injured many people.
This accident, marks the fourth such accident to occur in Ohio during the span of one week in which drivers have crashed into buildings and businesses. While it's not clear exactly what factors contributed to the other accidents, it's highly likely that driving errors or dangerous driving behaviors played a role.
Individuals who are harmed in such random or freak motor vehicle accidents often sustain serious injuries which require both immediate and ongoing medical care. Injuries sustained in these types of accidents are typically painful and can result in an individual suffering permanent impairment and disability.
