What was likely an exciting trip to the doctor for young Pittsburgh area parents-to-be turned to tragedy earlier this week when the vehicle in which they were travelling was involved in a collision with a tractor-trailer. The fatal truck accident occurred on Route 68.
According to authorities who responded to the scene, the accident occurred when the truck, which was travelling in the right lane, drifted a bit into oncoming traffic. At the same time, the car containing the couple, a 19-year-old woman who was three months pregnant and her boyfriend, was travelling in the opposite direction. When the tail end of the trailer crossed into the car's path, the car hit the much larger vehicle.
As a result of the force of the impact, the young man in the car was found outside of the vehicle. Despite this, he apparently survived and was transported to a hospital. His prognosis is not known. The young pregnant woman was driving the car and sadly did not survive. Rescuers had to cut her out of the car.
Weather may have played a role in this accident occurring. According to the driver of the truck, the wet road caused his truck to slip into the other lane as it ascended the hill. Any other contributing factors will likely be uncovered in the course of an investigation.
In the meantime however loved ones of the young couple are left to wonder what could have been. While the woman's boyfriend may survive, after the loss of a loved one and unborn child, things will likely never the same again for him.
