Can you imagine if your favorite candy had excessive amounts of lead in it? Well, unfortunately, this may be true for you. A well-known licorice maker has issued a nationwide recall after a supplier supposedly sold it defective lead-tainted molasses.
Specifically, American Licorice Co., producer of "Red Vines," has sued Total Sweeteners and Batory Foods in Federal Court. American Licorice makes the popular red and black licorice.
The story began when the company agreed to buy 1.5 million lbs. of molasses from Batory. Molasses is a huge component in black licorice. In 2011, American Licorice purportedly negotiated with Batory for goods consisting of 1,500,000 lbs. of bulk refiners syrup, which is another name for molasses.
However, after transaction was complete, the California Department of Public Health discovered the excessive lead content in the product, according to American Licorice. Subsequent testing of all ingredients contained in Red Vines licorice showed that the elevated level of lead was due to the molasses, which was received from Batory.
Due to the concern, American Licorice has recalled black licorice, including packaging containing mixed red and black licorice. All products manufactured prior to May 2013 are being addressed.
Fortunately, the issue has been caught in the aforementioned case. This will reduce risk exposure. Nevertheless, small product issues can create serious safety hazards for consumers. If such problems are not properly addressed, individuals may retain the right to a product liability suit.
If you believe that you have been harmed by a commercial product, you may benefit from speaking with an experienced personal injury law attorney in your area.
