A collision described as nearly head-on, occurred late last month in the Pittsburgh area, when a vehicle driven by a 28-year-old man crossed out of its lane and into oncoming traffic. Unfortunately, the vehicle the man's car struck in the incident was a school bus used to transport children.

There are many reasons a car accident such as this one might occur. On some occasions it is because a driver falls asleep behind the wheel. Other times a driver may experience a medical emergency of some sort that leaves him or her unable to control the vehicle. Still other times a driver may be intoxicated.

The last reason is being attributed as a cause for the recent collision. According to the bus driver, after the crash, the driver of the car attempted to get rid of something by throwing it outside of the car, down a large hill. When recovered, those items were determined to be heroin, apparently packaged for sale, and related paraphernalia. This finding led to the driver's arrest.

At the time of the crash there was one student, an 8-year-old on board the bus. Fortunately, that child was not injured in the collision. This was apparently the case for the drivers involved as well.

As any parent who has placed his or her child on a bus to get to school is undoubtedly all too aware, the life of their child is placed in the hands of the driver when he or she boards the bus. It is assumed that the driver will do what is necessary to get the children there safely. Unfortunately, as this case illustrates, even when the bus driver is taking proper steps to do so, other drivers on the road may not be.
