As parents throughout the state of Pennsylvania are likely aware, toddler aged children can get into a lot of trouble in a matter of only seconds. That trouble can take the form of many different activities, including falls, cuts and burns. It also can lead to things falling on a child. While in some cases falling objects can result in only minor bumps, other times the end result can be much worse and even lead to death.
The risk of crushing young children recently led to the recall of children's dressers made by two different companies. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the dressers could fall on top of children who used open drawers as a ladder or an improvised flight of steps. In the worst cases the dressers can suffocate children who are trapped under them.
The dressers recently recalled were made by two different companies including Million Dollar Baby and Natart/Gemme Juvenile. In an effort to prevent these types of incidents in the future, both companies are providing retrofit kits that are designed to prevent the furniture from falling over.
While not known, it is possible that the family of the three children who died could file a products liability lawsuit against the manufacturers of the recalled dressers involved in their deaths. The lawsuit could be filed due to the furniture's defective design. Though such a lawsuit would undoubtedly be painful for the family, it could help provide a sense of closure to those who loved the children.
