Teen drivers often participate in risky driving behavior over holiday

Drunk driving is an issue for drivers of all ages throughout the New Castle area at all times of the year. While it is true that impaired drivers take to the road each and every day of the year, New Year's Eve is by far one of the worst when it comes to the activity. According to a recent study, this is particularly true when it comes to teen drivers.

The survey which, was conducted on behalf of both Students Against Destructive Decisions and Liberty Mutual Insurance, sought information on the consumption of alcohol from a total of 1,700 teens in 11th and 12th grade located throughout the nation. Among other things, the survey found that more than 10 percent admitted to getting behind the wheel and operating a vehicle on the last day of the year after drinking or doing drugs. As is the case in any in instance of drunk driving it is frustrating because it is completely preventable.

This behavior is dangerous as it can lead to car accidents and is definitely an issue for teens throughout the nation. Each year, approximately 1,000 teen deaths involving vehicles are due to the involvement of alcohol, despite it being illegal for individuals under the age of 21 to even consume alcohol.

In an effort to prevent accidents caused by drunk drivers of all ages, law enforcement throughout the state banded together over this past holiday. Their campaign, which consisted of increased patrols and checkpoints where sobriety was confirmed, also sought to squash aggressive driving behaviors and promote the use of seatbelts.
