E. coli traced to spinach, recall issued in Pennsylvania

Nearly every day one hears that eating healthy foods such as a dark greens is good for the body. While true in theory, many nonetheless decide to skip salads made from things such as spinach. In some cases, those individuals may be healthier–in the short-term anyway.

Recently, packages of spinach were recalled due to the possibility of E. coli. Sold by the supermarket Wegmans under its own label, Organic Spinach & Spring Mix, the 5 and 11-ounce containers were available in several states including Pennsylvania. It was available for purchase in the weeks starting October 14 and ending November 1.

Anyone who has experienced illness due to E. coli is aware of just how undesirable it is to have to deal with. Its symptoms include:

  • Dehydration
  • Bloody diarrhea
  • Kidney failure

While the majority of people who become sickened from it survive, in the worst cases, death can occur. The elderly, young and individuals who suffer from immune systems that are weak are the most prone to becoming sick from it.

Problems with the food were discovered in a neighboring state. Officials in that state determined that it was the spinach that was causing residents of that state to fall ill. As a result, several groups are looking into the problem. The list includes: the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and New York State Department of Health.

It is never okay for someone to become ill from food that is consumed. In those situations it may be worth it to explore filing a personal injury lawsuit.
